Fuse Beads for Adults: Why the Boom, and How to Start

Adults are getting into fuse beads because they are cheap and easy to start, fun to share on social media, and relaxing to make. In China the craft (called pindou) took off among adults from late 2024, and in Japan more and more grown-ups are making accessories and fan merch with it.
Why are adults into fuse beads right now?
Fuse beads (perler-style beads; pindou in Chinese) are tiny plastic beads you arrange on a pegboard and fuse together with an iron. In China they became a huge adult hobby from around late 2024; the reasons given are the low cost (about 30–40 yuan per piece), the likes a finished piece gets on social media, and the emotional satisfaction of making it. In Japan, too, social media has more adults making accessories and fan merch from beads.
Fuse beads may still feel like a kids’ craft, but they are now a real grown-up hobby. Mini 2.6 mm beads in particular let you make pieces small enough to wear, or detailed enough to look like a photo, which suits the way adults like to use them.
China's fuse bead boom in numbers
According to an article on the Japanese marketing site Manamina (April 8, 2026), fuse beads caught on among adults in China from late 2024, and the boom continued through 2025. Here are the numbers it reports.
The article gives three reasons for the boom: materials are cheap and the craft is easy; posting your work on social media earns likes, making it a kind of "social currency"; and making it offers "emotional value". It also notes that fuse beads were invented in Sweden in 1971 as rehabilitation for older people, and only later spread in the US as an educational toy for children. In other words, they were made for adults in the first place.

In Japan: social media, fan merch and Heisei retro
In Japan, an article on the news site Mezamashi Media (August 14, 2026) reports a wave of adults hooked on fuse beads thanks to social media. Making accessories and oshikatsu (fan activity) goods and posting them online has become popular, with Heisei-era retro and Y2K motifs and finely detailed character pieces getting the most attention.
For fan merch, a heart, star or crown in your favorite member's color already makes a great piece. Swap the color codes in a free pattern for your own colors to make it yours.
Keep character and logo designs for your own personal enjoyment, though. Selling or handing out copies of character pieces or patterns is not OK.
Why 2.6 mm mini beads suit adults

Before you start

- 2.6 mm beads are very small: work and store them out of reach of young children and pets who might put them in their mouths
- An adult should do the ironing (or supervise closely when making with kids); the beads and pegboard are hot right after ironing
